影片中的角色各自面臨了困境：身為農村家庭裡第一個識字的人，如何才能擠進大學？和每年應屆畢業的200萬名大學生一起成為找不到工作的「蟻族」，是什麼滋味？要是唯一能找到的工作，是賣明知不值錢的文憑給其他人，是否該昧著良心去做？怵目驚心的真實故事，顯示在中國，教育可能不再是脫貧的憑藉，而是一場巨大的騙局。

In ancient China, education was the only way out of poverty – in recent times it has been the best way. China's economic boom and talk of the merits of hard work have created an expectation that to study is to escape poverty. But these days China's education system only leads to jobs for a few, educating a new generation to unemployment and despair.
