First broadcast as a radio current affairs interview, Kathy EASDALE’s six-minute monologue describes how she found out about the death of her son Matthew. She is not only being a witness: she is bearing witness. Line by line she builds a detailed and compelling account of hope, discovery and grief; breath by breath she declares her love for her son. Like a metronome, or a heartbeat, minute after minute, the rhythm of her song beats out: every 28 frames.
As a film, His Mother's Voice uses the same voice track twice, with different approaches to colour, to cutting, to shot selection, and to sound. The two halves of His Mother’ Voice are as distinctive as possible, to present two views of love and death.
