人們在公共場所進行生活的展演，所有的行為都被注視與回應。這部短片紀錄了五個公共場所：深夜的火車站候車室、暮色中礦場的公車站、搖搖晃晃的公車車廂內、由公車車廂改建而成的餐廳、兼具桌球室及舞廳功能的長途巴士候車廳。人們在這些公共場所裡來去或駐足、互動或獨處，他們來自不同的階級、性別與年齡，卻同樣在這些空間中流動著。本片是賈樟柯的首部紀錄片作品，精確呈現了人們在公共空間的各種姿態。
A suburban train station. A man in military overcoat is wandering in his own solitude. A train arrives, a woman and a heavy bag of flour appear on the platform. A bus station in the mining area. An old man is giving all his effort to zip his coat. A young lady misses her bus. An old bus is converted into a restaurant. A gangster sits in the bus, looking at women passing by. The music is still on. Nevertheless, we can sense the depressed mood in these scenes.
